against, newt gingrich and rick santorum, almost certainly those candidates would not have stayed in race as long as they did, would not have been viable candidates after losing several contests, in each case, without basically a billionaire or two backing them with checks as high as $500 million. and as a result, republican primary was much more prolonged than it would have been. romney and his friends had to spend much more money than expected defending him in those early months. and really the whole dynamic of what we were used to in early presidential politics where i will, new hampshire, south carolina got a nominee was sort of updated for a few weeks. since then, super pacs, when romney with the nomination, -- he'd relied heavily on super pacs through the summer months he was advertising. of course, this is not technically coordinated advertising, and trevor can speak of realities and fiction there. and it had some clear obvious positive affects of holding parity with the president as he unleashed an attack against romney this summer. but it also has shown to have weaknesses i

in terms of transparency since the mid '90s when speaker gingrich really pushed the library to make thomas and al all of that information available to the public. and as we started this, both during the transition, last time around and going forward through this congress, i think speaker, later cancer and, frankly, the republican congress as a whole has tried to lead on transparency issues, and this made him a priority. this god manifested any number of different ways during our rules package the most notably was the rules change which said for the first time in history of the republic that paper and electronic versions of a document were equivalent. that if something was available electronically it was as good as if it had been printed by the government printing office, stuck on a truck, delivered over here and then distributed to individual offices. there were other things we did, mandatory webcasting kind would push committee to do that, maximum extent practical. we also as part of the effort to make electronic text available, you know, serve as a place where they could measure o

american values and newt gingrich are at the center for american progress. i want to thank you for joining us. for the past, rogue demographics, economics and voter registration, voter ideology in the 2012 election. and i want to wish you all paid happy voter registration day. i'm sure everyone in this room s registered to vote. this is being cohosted by two fantastic teams. if we are just a few weeks before the election and i know that may seem like a very short time but in politics it's a lifetime. we were interested in taking down into what is actually happening in the states. what trends were occurring, how do people feel about economy and the current state of affairs, and most importantly who are the people who actually show up at the polls in november. we wanted to have a follow-up discussion about economics, demographics and implications for 2012. this is a follow up to the practice released in november of last you. .co office wanted to see what a change in the past year and what, if anything, it would mean for the presidential election. so with that kind pleased to introduc

. upon that was being of newt gingrich but still, or rick perry or whoever was the flavor of the week and republican primary. but $87 million, and crossroads 30 million overall. and after that club for growth, $12.3 million to massive amounts of money into cycle. and so i just think it is what it is but it's reality we're getting with. it's why we're here today to talk about and it's a very difficult thing for campaigns to deal with. >> you did say i think when looking at the practical matter of this campaign the president's campaign is outspending pretty significant governor romney's campaign on television but you're right, with the outside groups is actually, if you aggregate the president and the groups on the left and governor rod and groups on the right it is governor romney side as heavyweight on television but it's relatively close but it is an aggregate that the is on is on that site. that is an important part. this used to be the party committees, republican national committee and the democratic national committee used to be able to do this. as well intentioned as finance reform
